1st ODI-IND Vs ENG

RAIN GOD DEPRIVES INDIA OF A POSSIBLE VICTORY
- By S.Ravichandran

Having been whitewashed in the Test series 0-4 and losing the only T20I, India needed to prove their superiority at least in the ODI matches, being the reigning World Champions.

The first ODI was played at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-street on 3rd September 2011.  It was a day match. England won the toss and chose to field.  With Tendulkar ruled out of the match, Parthiv Patel opened the innings with in-form Rahane.  Surprisingly Parthiv Patel dominated the show with some fine shots, supported well by Rahane.  When Rahane got out for 40, Dravid came and went out soon, once again facing a controversial decision.  Kohli made 55, while Rohit Sharma once again disappointed getting out for a nought.  Once Parthiv got out for a well made 95, Raina and Dhoni built a good partnership towards the end enabling India amass a competitive total of 274/7 from the stipulated 50 overs.

England faced trouble right at the beginning losing Cook and Kieswetter cheaply.  Trott and Bell started to re-build the innings.  But rain interrupted the play when the score was 27/2 from 7.2 overs.  There was no further play and the match was abandoned.

India would have been totally disappointed as they seemed to dominate England for the first time in the series and a target of 275 looked difficult for England.

India take on England in the 2nd ODI at Southampton, a day/night affair, on 6th September 2011.
