IPL Season 5 - Status After Day 43

DLF IPL Season 5

Match 65
Mumbai Indians Vs Kolkata Knight Riders
at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field.  Must be a bad decision considering their poor record at home and chasing would add more pressure.  Mumbai would have felt happy after dismissing McCullum for one run and Kallis for a nought.  Gambhir made just 27 off 33 balls.  Barring Manoj Tiwary who made 41 off 43 balls no other batsman cared to stay for a long time as a result of which Kolkata could post only 140/7.  However the score looked competitive considering the condition of the pitch which was helpful to the bowlers.

Mumbai lost its opener Gibbs for 13 runs.  Tendulkar made 27 off 24 balls.  Thereafter it was total struggle for the Mumbai Indians as they lost wickets at regular intervals apart from staying below the required run rate throughout.  Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 108 in 19.1 overs and KKR won by 32 runs.  Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers with the figures 3.1-0-15-4 and also captured the Purple Cap.

7 matches remaining before the Play-Offs and this is the current status:

Possibilities
DELHI
20
2
17/05 Bangalore
19/05 Punjab
Have qualified for the play-offs irrespective of the result of the remaining matches. Would do a great favour to CSK by knocking off RCB and KXIP who are CSK's main competitors for the 4th spot.
MUMBAI
18
1
20/05 Rajasthan
Must win the match against Rajasthan to confirm their position in Top 4 and pack off Rajasthan.
KOLKATA
19
1
19/05 Pune
With no threat for them in the Top 4 positions they have to win against Pune to move to the top spot in the Points Table.
CHENNAI
17
1
17/05 Punjab
Must win match for Chennai to reach 19 points.  Even if they are tied at points with Bangalore in the end, CSK's healthy NRR would save them.
BANGLAORE
15
2
17/05 Delhi
20/05 Deccan
Must win both the games and expect KXIP to knock off Chennai.
RAJASTHAN
14
2
18/05 Deccan
20/05 Mumbai
Must win both the games and expect Chennai and Bangalore to finish at 17 points each.
PUNJAB
14
2
17/05 Chennai
19/05 Delhi
Must win both the games to have any chance of qualifying.  Then RCB and RR should win just one match each to stay below KXIP.

17th May will be crucial day for 3 teams viz. Punjab, Chennai and Bangalore as a defeat would end their chances of making to the Playoffs, though Chennai would still have a chance if Rajasthan lose at least one of the two matches left and Delhi must knock off Punjab.
